This standard exists because the metrics alone can mislead. Domain Rating in Ahrefs measures link graph strength and, by Ahrefs' own admission, does not account for spam, traffic or domain age on its own. SEMrush's Authority Score is harder to inflate artificially because it blends link data with real estimated organic visibility. Ahrefs itself tells users not to judge a site by a single site-wide authority number, since Domain Rating tracks link strength without weighing in on spam or actual visitor traffic. A domain can carry an impressive DR built from a handful of manipulated or low-quality links while still showing close to zero real readers. That combination, high DR paired with near-zero organic traffic, is one of the clearest disqualifying signals in our vetting process, regardless of how strong the raw authority number looks on the surface.

Spam Score and Why We Cap It Hard

Moz's Domain Authority model, unlike a pure link-graph score, factors in Spam Score and broader link-quality patterns directly. We set a hard internal ceiling on acceptable spam score for any site entering our premium network and a domain that fails this check gets excluded even if its DA and DR both look strong. A high-authority site sitting on a bed of spammy, low-quality inbound links can drag your own backlink down with it once search engines reassess that network, so this filter is not optional in our process.

Why Spam Score Alone Is Not Enough Either

A low spam score does not guarantee a good placement on its own; it simply confirms the site is not surrounded by obvious link manipulation. We still layer traffic and DA/DR checks on top, since a clean but completely inactive domain is still not worth a client's budget.
